Forthcoming
19th October - The Music of Michael Pisaro and Makiko Nishikaze / The Roundchapel Auditorium, Powerscroft Road, London, E5 0PU. 8pm. [details]
SARU & Compost and Height present an evening of the music of Michael Pisaro and Makiko Nishikaze.
American composer Michael Pisaro's July Mountain is a translation of the Wallace Stevens poem, July Mountain, into sound. It is a dense combination of strictly timed, crossfaded field recordings, sourced on this occasion from areas around the UK, and a slew of percussion sounds, such as bowed snare drums and the bowing of a prepared vibraphone. Ricefall, another piece by Pisaro, like July Mountain, was originally written for the percussionist Greg Stuart and realised in the studio with a great many overdubs. Its performance at Cafe Oto will consist of 16 performers positioned around the venue, each adhering to a series of timings, whilst letting fall constant streams of rice onto a series of different objects.
Pianist Tim Parkinson will also be performing, on piano, works by Japanese composer, Makiko Nishikaze.
Participating in this event will be: Daniel Bennett , Seth Cooke, Stephen Cornford, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, Angharad Davies, Jane Dickson, Patrick Farmer, Lawrence Dunn, Bruno Guastalla, Jack Harris, Sarah Hughes, Kostis Kilymis, Dominic Lash, Will Montgomery, Tim Parkinson, Samuel Rodgers, David Stent, Greg Stuart, and Paul Whitty.

An evening of deep listening, featuring five works by composers in or around the Wandelweiser collective, performed by the 40-strong ensemble murmuration. All of the pieces in the programme leave the choice of sounds to the musicians, who will be dispersed throughout the Cafe, with no physical separation between players and audience. The evening’s concert celebrates the release of a 6-CD box set ‘Wandelweiser und so weiter’ (Wandelweiser and so on) on the Another Timbre label, as well as retrospective launches of other discs by James Saunders, Michael Pisaro and the No Islands quartet. All these CDs will be on sale at ridiculously low prices for one night only. It should be an extraordinary evening, full of wonderful and unusual sounds. Cafe Oto. |

"The door creaks open, and it's like sneaking into a seance. The last time we covered the upstairs scene of this hardcore improvising hang-out, Fizzle's atmosphere was far more outgoing. Tonight, it's near silent in here. Candles are fluttering on the few inhabited tables. Some of the shadowy figures in the select gathering are just about recognisable. Oh, and there's a band playing, though you might not have noticed that at first. This is minimalism to the maximum. The night's opening act is Hadaly (what does that mean, anyone?), a trio from Oxford. Maybe they should have been headliners, as this date was launching their six-part Jazz Services tour. Maybe they did expect to be headliners
It's a long time since I've heard (just about) an outfit that are so beautifully, lovingly quiet, so acoustically pure. I was ready for this near-silence after the previous evening's bass-whumping onslaught of Groove Armada at the Birmingham Academy. All three players are busy stroking their instruments very lightly. Malcolm Atkins bows his violin like he's slicing limes, Dominic Lash feints fingers against barely-taut double bass strings, and David Stent scrabbles guitar in muted John Russell fashion, with a touch of Derek Bailey. Yes, it's hard to avoid citing these two names when you're in the world of improvised acoustic guitar. The trio have a subtle sense of space and texture, a marvellous ability to impose self-restraint. Even when Atkins blows into his harmonium-melodica thing, his throaty wheezes are still transparent. When the threesome start heightening their activity, it almost spoils the effect, breaking the spell. In a way, I bet they're glad the audience was so small. They could never have captured this stillness in a crowded, glass-clinking room." [Martin Longley, Jazz Review, January 2005]
