Tease (Memory's Handwriting) (2000) Digital video projection [still] |
A visual pun from the playground is re-framed in another type of coded
language. The trick relies on a particular deception within that system
of communication - the reading of lips. Here translated to a finger
'writing' in the air (or in fact on screen) the word 'colourful' and the phrase 'I love you' are removed from their deceptive roles and exist as lethargically transcribed words of innocence. The shapes that briefly appear on the screen rely on a continual
reading and association within the memory. Attempting to bridge two
worlds, two differing systems, is a process of irony.
